There are three main types of phobias, but specific phobias are by far the most common. Specific phobias are your classic phobia, where a person has a fear of an ordinary object, or is much more afraid of something than they should be. Specific phobias come inĀ  many different forms, but luckily specific phobias can be treated, sometimes without the help of a professional.

Many of the most well known phobias, like the fear of snakes or heights, are categorized as specific phobias. Phobias are an extreme overreaction to something that is not life threatening or dangerous. However, a person with a phobia cannot control how they feel or react when they come into contact with their phobic trigger. In fact, most people who suffer from phobias know how strange their behavior is, but cannot do anything to stop it. They also cannot explain why everyone else loves kittens and they will run for three blocks every time they see a kitten or even a small cat. It is unfortunate that some people have to deal with a condition that affects them this way.

The five types of specific phobia are animal phobias, natural environment phobias, situational phobias, blood injection phobia, and other specific phobias. Animal phobias are simply the fear of certain animals, while natural environment phobias are fears concerning aspects of the natural environment, such as heights or thunderstorms. Situational phobias are fears of a scenario that are perceived to be dreadful, like going to the doctor or being trapped in a small space. Blood injection phobias are the fear of needles, blood, or medical procedures, and although all phobias make people feel like they might pass out, blood injection phobias are the only phobias that will actually make someone pass out. There is also an ‘other subset that is for phobias which are set aside for phobias that don’t fit in a totally into the additional four groups.

Although there is no surefire way to cure every case of phobia, treatment for specific phobias focuses on making a person confront their fear. This method works because the phobia is an irrational reaction and their brain sees something as a greater threat than it is. By exposing oneself to the phobic trigger and replacing the phobic response with a controlled response, they break the link in their brain between the trigger and danger. Sometimes medication can help reduce the anxiety associated with severe specific phobias, but medication is used much more commonly with other types of phobias.

Because most phobias are specific phobias, the phobias from the other two groups, social phobia and Agoraphobia, can be confused for a specific phobia. Both social phobia and Agoraphobia sound much like situational phobias about being in public or in trapped in a certain space, but they have different triggers and treatment methods. Before declaring yourself phobic, especially if your phobia concerns going in public or a fear of panic attacks, you should consult a professional before you start experimenting with your fears.
