How do steroids work?
Although the process is not fully understood it is believed that steroids increase muscle mass by increasing the rate that protein is converted into new muscle tissue. It has also been suggested that steroids decrease circulating levels of the catabolic hormone cortisol. As we saw earlier cortisol is a hormone that breaks larger compounds down into smaller. The reason people under stress lose weight is because their bodies are flooded with cortisol, which breaks their muscle tissue down. Steroids both block cortisol synthesis as well as compete with it for receptors. The end result is to keep the body in an anabolic state. Now you see why steroids are so popular?
Who was the first steroids guru?
Most modern steroids owe their existence to Dr John Ziegler. After hearing about the Russians using testosterone in the 1950’s to improve their weightlifters, he designed the first anabolic steroid – Dianabol – with the Ciba company in 1958. Since then steroids have been used by millions of people.
Are steroids powerful muscle builders?
When bodybuilders and other athletes heard about the muscle building effects of steroids it wasn’t long before they began adding them to their diets. It started in the 1950’s and by the late 1960’s and early 1970’s steroids were being used by millions of athletes to build muscle and increase strength levels. created by www.steroid.org
