Trevor Mulholland asked:

Having enough knowledge about adult teenage and baby acne will make you better prepared in dealing with these conditions. Knowing more about them will also help alleviate confusion and avoid fear. The good thing about all this is that all of these conditions can be easily remedied; all you need is a bit of information and a consultation with your dermatologist.

Adult teenage and baby acne have differing characteristics. To improve your knowledge about each condition, read on.

Adult pimples

There are more women than men who suffer from adult acne. The reason for this is not yet established, but the fact that hormones have a lot to do with pimples made some skin experts conclude that pregnancy, menopause and menstruation might have something to do with it. According to some studies, women are more prone to hormonal imbalance; hence they are more likely to suffer from adult acne. A number of research have also speculated that stress is another major culprit since surveys have revealed that successful adults, or those who have a lot of responsibilities and therefore under a lot of stress, are the ones who are more likely to suffer from adult acne.

Teenage acne

Teenagers comprise the largest population who suffer from acne among all the age groups. This is explained by the onset of puberty, the period in a human’s life when the body starts producing androgens. Although teenage boys are more likely to suffer from pimples than girls, it is the women who are likely to carry the condition to their adulthood. While some will leave their pimples behind once they reach their 20s, others might continue to suffer from this condition even when they are already in their 40s. Whatever the case might be, adolescent zits should be addressed, primarily because teenagers are the most likely to suffer from insecurities caused by a less-than-perfect physical appearance.

Baby acne

Also known as acne neonatorum, baby acne affects an estimated 25 percent of newborn infants. Papules usually appear on babies’ cheeks, but can also be found in their backs and necks. Baby acne is caused by the higher-than-normal activity of the baby’s sebaceous glands. This is induced by the maternal hormones that pass through the placenta and remain with the baby even after delivery. In most cases, the acne disappears after a couple of weeks to a month. Some though, persists for a few months. Baby acne should not be confused with milia or the tiny bumps that can appear on the baby’s skin right after delivery. Milia or milk spots also disappear after a few weeks. They have a bump-like appearance as opposed to baby acne which is usually reddish and looks like common skin lesions.

Adult teenage and baby acne have their own characteristics and their own remedies. Knowing the reason behind their occurrence and understanding the mechanism behind them will give a person a better chance of finding the appropriate cure for each condition.

Adam asked:

Acne is recognized as the number one skin problem in the world with teenagers as its more common victims. Acne is not limited to teenagers, but it can occur to people of all ages. Infants or babies are not any exceptions to that.

Causes of Baby Acne:

Baby acne, also known as infantile acne, is not uncommon. Following are the causes of infantile acne.

·Excessively oily skin

·Bad nutrition

·Change of hormones

Excessively Oily Skin:

Although infants usually don’t suffer from oily skin, however, in rare cases, baby acne is caused by excessively oily skin. If you find that your bundle of joy has oily skin and has acne, you should wash the skin of your sweet little baby with warm water and mild baby soap at least three times a day.

Bad Nutrition:

Since your baby cannot pick up bad eating habits at this early age, infantile acne due to bad nutrition is very rare. Bad nutrition can be the cause of infantile acne if parents are not attentive toward their babies’ diet. If you are thoughtful of your baby’s diet, then what is causing your baby to suffer from acne is—

Change of Hormones:

It can happen to infants before their births. Mother’s hormones get passed to the baby via the placenta. Change of hormones can also happen when the baby has been separated from the mother. Mother’s milk is also a source of hormones for the baby.

Due to any of the above mentioned causes of baby acne, acne can occur to babies in as young age as 2 to 3 weeks.

Baby Acne Treatment:

Many doctors suggest not using anything for baby acne, but just mild baby soaps with warm water on the baby’s skin during baths for cleansing the skin in order to treat baby acne. You should do just as the doctors suggest. However, if acne doesn’t disappear by the advised cleansing method, you can try, after consulting from your baby’s doctor, very mild over-the-counter 100% natural acne treatment lotions or creams.

Lesley Lyon asked:

Baby, the word itself gives a lot of happiness, dream, pleasure etc. no words to explain, especially for a woman it is a precious gift and for the family too. Mother is a person who spends lot of time with the baby, caring it very well by observing each and every bodily and behavioral activity. In rare case it must be a surprise for the mother to notice that their baby breaks out in little red pimples, which mostly occurs around 4 weeks of age. This state is known as Baby Acne. This might puzzle the mother because on some occasions the pimples can appear strongly and then seem to disappear. Baby Acne is very common and usually it appears on the cheeks and sometimes on the forehead, chin and even on the back.

Baby acne has some common symptoms. In most cases, the acne first becomes visible to be a rash like small pimples which appears to be red. Occasionally, small whiteheads might be surrounded by reddish skin. They can become more prominent when your baby is hot or overheated or if his skin is irritated. Young mothers must reconcile themselves, because baby acne will disappear soon and they must not be over concerned about that. Baby acne is a very common condition that affects a large number of babies.

Generally baby Acne can be seen in newborns in the age group of four weeks to six months. Physician opinion on baby acne is that it happens at the time of giving birth and a short period of time before that, the mother’s hormone’s are allowed to pass through the placenta to the baby, which arouse some last minute physical development in the baby’s body. This development leads to increasing the size of the lungs in order to prepare them for breathing air, this also stimulate oil production in the baby’s skin, which will lead to baby acne if the level of oil increases in the baby’s skin.

Baby Acne usually clears within a short period of time say, a few weeks and rather if it continues for more than three months, then you must consult a pediatrician. In most cases a pediatrician assess the severity of the baby’s acne and recommends a gentle medication. Physicians generally recommend to the parents to wash their baby’s face daily with water or sometimes gently with mild baby soap. As vigorous washing and scrubbing will irritate baby’s skin, just cleanse the face once or twice a day. Applying creams, oils etc will make the acne worse. Being a mother the appearance of acne on the baby may bother you, but it will least affect the baby. So patience is the best course of action.

Trevor Mulholland asked:

Adult teenage and baby acne all have something in common: they can happen to anyone. Although pimples are more associated with teenagers, adults and babies can also suffer from this skin condition. But just like adolescent zits, treatments for acne in babies and adults are also widely available.

Adult teenage and baby acne treatments have different formulations and level of efficacy. Each remedy is formulated to fit the patient’s type of skin and age. To get a better understanding of what’s available, here is a brief discussion.

Adult acne treatments

Some people leave their pimples behind once they hit their 20s, while some are not so lucky. For people who still suffer from acne even in their 20s and beyond, there is no need to despair. A lot of treatment options are already available for adult pimples and most of them have been proven effective.

For women who suffer from acne even in their adult years, the most common culprit is hormones. Menopause, menstrual cycle and pregnancy are some of the reasons why some women still suffer from the occasional zit. If hormone is really the factor behind the acne, hormone therapies designed to lower the androgen levels are usually prescribed.

Meanwhile, general treatment for both adult men and women can include topical ointments such as antibacterials and retinoids. In some cases, making adjustments in your daily habits like getting enough sleep and relaxing can make all the difference in the world. Tension and stress are also two of the most common reasons why adults suffer from acne. Learning to relax by exercising or taking yoga lessons might be enough to balance your being and keep the acne away.

Baby acne

Pimples on babies usually do not need treatment. In most cases, they just disappear after a few weeks or a month. But if the acne persists, a visit to a dermatologist is necessary. Mild acne medications might be prescribed by the doctor, but in the meantime, making sure that the baby is comfortable is your first line of defense. Clean the baby’s skin regularly. Don’t use rough cloths to dry him and keep his sheets and his clothes clean. Use a mild soap and don’t be tempted to rub the bumps or they will get worse. Keep your baby as cool as possible since the heat might make his acne worse.

Teenage acne

In majority of teenage acne cases, alcohol-based ****** wash or pimple treatments are prescribed by the dermatologist. This is because adolescence is the period when the skin glands produce excessive oil. Recommending a moisture-rich formula is just not appropriate for oily skin. If oil is not the main reason, a number of regular remedies can be used, although it is still better to seek the advice of a dermatologist.

Adult teenage and baby acne are conditions that can easily be controlled by over-the-counter remedies. But as always, playing it safe is the primary rule; and this means a visit to a dermatologist who knows better what is best for your skin.

Alien asked:

Baby acne is usually seen on the cheeks, chin, and forehead. It can be present at birth but usually develops around 3 to 4 weeks of age. Baby acne occurs when hormonal changes in the body stimulate oil glands in the baby’s skin. The condition can look worse when the baby is crying or fussy, or any other instance that increases blood flow to the skin. Lesions include small, red, papules, which mainly affect the cheeks, as well as the nasal bridge of infants. Infants usually develop neonatal acne because of stimulation of the baby’s sebaceous glands by lingering maternal hormones after delivery. These hormones cross the placenta into the baby and after delivery they cause the oil glands on the skin to form bumps that look like pimples. Baby acne usually clears up within a few weeks, but it can linger for months.

Causes

Baby acne is associated by changes in the level of hormones, bad nutrition and greasy or oily skin. But the main cause of this type of acne is changes in the production of hormones. Before the birth, pregnant lady to newborn baby transmits the hormones. Sometimes, baby acne is associated by contact with dirty clothes.

Baby Acne Treatment

Usually, no treatment is necessary. It is best to leave it alone. Topical remedies and vigorous washing could irritate your baby’s sensitive skin.

It may surprise you but oil and lotions do not help. What can help is cleaning the face of the baby once a day with water or you can use a baby soap.

Don’t scrub the face of your baby, scrubbing can cause skin irritation.

- Use a product with a vinegar solution make sure you buy a product with all natural ingredients.

- Keep in mind that it is not a good idea to put creams or oils on the face of your baby. This solution can work with teenager or adult acne but it will not help with baby acne.

Mary Murphy asked:

Baby acne is a common disorder that affects approximately 20% of newborns. It’s nothing serious that you need to panic about, but should be treated. In this article I examine some of the best practices for treating baby acne.

To treat baby acne, it is important to understand what it is first. With adult acne, your body produces hormones, which will stimulate to sebaceous glands to produce more oil. The oil production begins in your follicles and as your hair grows, it brings it out through the layers of the skin. The follicles become clogged with oil and bacteria and your skin becomes inflamed. In baby acne, it begins much the same only the hormones cross the placenta during birth and then stimulate the baby’s sebaceous glands. Your baby’s skin is irritated by those hormones and that is when the little pimply bumps occur. It can occur in one area or all over the body. Baby acne can also be caused by certain medications or if nursing, by ingesting something that is in the ****** milk that could cause acne to flare up. When flared up, looks like little whiteheads and the skin may be red.

Baby acne may not reveal itself right away. They can get it right at delivery or up to three weeks of age. It occurs in both genders, more typically in boys.

To treat it, simply wash your baby with a mild soap and warm water. Once a day should be sufficient. Never use harsh soaps, exfoliants or scrubs as this could irritate their skin even more. When they are done with the bath, pat them dry with a soft towel, don’t rub their skin abrasively. Acne is an internal issue and being dirty will not cause acne so it is important to remember not to over wash your baby’s skin as this will cause further irritation. Also, avoid using lotions or oil as this could also cause further irritation. If you insist on using lotion, use a lotion that is oil free, hypoallergenic and does not contain any fragrance.

Keep in mind the type of fabrics you are using as well as detergents. Certain fabrics may cause irritation in your baby’s skin, including their clothing, blankets and towels. Use mild, hypoallergenic detergent when washing your baby’s fabrics.

If your baby has severe acne, there are over the counter products available. It is advised to speak with your doctor or medical professional when using any product for your newborn. Some rather safe products you can use are creams such as hydrocortisone. Ionic silver is the safest treatment available because it not only kills bacteria, but it also promotes healthy skin and reduces irritation.

Do not use adult acne products on a baby’s skin. Adult skin is much more developed and is used to fighting off bacteria. Adult products are much too strong for developing skin in babies and could cause even more breakouts.

Baby acne is not genetic; it’s just the reaction to hormones. Just because your baby has acne as a newborn does not mean he/she will have it as an adult.

If the baby acne does not go away at four months, talk to your doctor. They are not in any danger of scarring; it’s just an irritant to them.

Sarah Young asked:

If you have recently noticed pimples on your newborn baby’s skin, do not panic. Baby acne or infantile acne is a very common occurrence. It is possible for acne to show up at birth, but more often than not it appears later. Often it appears when the baby is a few weeks old. It is relatively easy to spot. The acne can be red pimples or little whiteheads and the skin surrounding it might be red. These most commonly appear on the baby’s cheeks, chin, forehead, and at times on their back.

An exact cause for baby acne cannot fully be agreed upon by professionals. There are a few explanations that have been offered. The most common answer addresses a situation that occurs at in the very last moments of pregnancy. At that time the mother’s hormones may cross the placenta and be passed on to the baby. This can stimulate the baby’s oil glands and in turn cause acne.

Medications that are taken by the mother or the baby can cause acne as well. Acne can be a side effect of medication that is taken by the mother while she is nursing and a medication the baby is taking directly can have the same result.

Certain conditions can cause the acne to worsen. Very hot temperatures and fussiness can cause a breakout. They both can cause an increase in blood flow which can cause the production of sebum to increase. Sebum is the oil that clogs the pores. Any contact with harsh detergents can cause a breakout as well.

There is no specific prescription for baby acne because it usually goes away on its own. It can disappear within a few weeks of its first appearance or it can take months. By the time the child is four to six months old it should be gone. It is possible to speed up the process by gently washing the baby’s face with water and a little mild baby soap, if you so choose. Make sure to also wipe off any milk the baby has spit up if it is on their face. The milk and saliva can cause more acne if it is allowed to sit on the skin for an extended amount of time.

There are a few actions that should not be taken. When washing the baby’s face do not scrub it, this will further irritate the skin. Parents should also not use any types of powders, oils, lotions or creams on the acne. This will not help the pimples; it will only make them worse. If the acne is on the baby’s back, make sure that the baby is clothe with soft, breathable hypoallergenic fabrics. The baby’s skin should be able to breathe freely in a cool, clean aired environment to allow the acne problem to heal properly.

If the condition still persists after the child is six months you may want to consult your pediatrician. They can prescribe a gentle medication if the condition is severe.

Sri Ariantini asked:

Baby acne is a very common situation among newborn babies. Baby acne can be present at the time of birth or may usually develop within 2 to 4 weeks after birth. Baby acne is the result of the hormonal changes in the body as these changes affects the oil glands in the baby?s skin.

Baby acne, as with all medical conditions, has some common symptoms. Usually the acne first appears to be a rash with small pimples that are red in appearance. Sometimes, white heads can actually be seen. The pimples will tend to show up more when the baby is upset or overheated and at times they may even seem as though they are not there at all. Baby acne will clear up with time and are not something that young mothers should be overly concerned about.

Baby Acne is primarily caused by fetal hormones, such as adrenal androgens, that are passed through the placenta prior to birth. Drugs, taken by the nursing mum or by the baby, can also trigger baby acne. The most common ones include: Steroids (oral or topical), anti-depressant medicines and occasionally oral contraceptives.

What causes baby acne?

There are several factors that can cause acne on the skin of the baby.

* As with adolescent acne, the condition can be caused by a skin irritation

* Medicines can causes baby acne as well

* It’s possible that mineral oil or petroleum can cause baby acne.

Bad Nutrition

Since your baby cannot pick up bad eating habits at this early age, infantile acne due to bad nutrition is very rare. Bad nutrition can be the cause of infantile acne if parents are not attentive toward their babies? diet.

Does Baby Acne Hurt? More often than not, you will be more influenced by your baby’s acne than she is. Baby acne does not itch, sting, or hurt in any way. And she is too young to notice her unsightly appearance. So it is more likely that baby acne will bother you, than your baby. However, with severe cases of baby acne, the blemishes may become so swollen and inflamed that they cause or add to your baby’s fussiness. See your health care provider if you think your baby’s acne is causing her aggravation.

Treatment

Baby acne usually remove by itself. It is sufficient in most cases to do some gentle ****** cleansing once or at most twice a day using a mild baby cleanser and clean water. Do not scrub baby’s face, this will not help and may be counterproductive. Don’t apply lotions or potions or oils. Don’t look for fancy baby acne treatment, don’t try applying vinegar solution for baby acne as some do. Unless baby’s acne is being caused by an underlying condition, there is really no need to treat it. It doesn’t hurt your baby and is purely a cosmetic issue. Softly wash your baby’s face with plain water once or twice per day, and don’t scrub. Cleansing that is too frequent or too strong will irritate your baby’s skin.

Prevention

· Child must not sleep on dirty pillows.

· Drink fresh fruits juices and much water.

· Do not squeeze, dig, touch or pick the acne.

· Use paper towels to pat the affected area dry and throw it away.

Arnold Hexden asked:

It is accepted that Acne is part of growing up for teenagers and and even young adults. The body changes and as we get older the surge of hormones all contribute to the likelihood of acne breaking out. However, as many new parents are discovering it is possible for a new born baby to show signs of acne and although many parents would either discount it or ignore the problem until diagnosed by a doctor it is actually quite common.

Signs to look out for :

It usually takes the form of small white pimples or whitehead’s on the baby’s face, forehead chin or cheeks and tends to be aggravated by the baby’s dribbling, or when they bring up formula and milk. It is essential to be aware that detergent used for washing your baby’s clothes can also be a cause of baby acne, however If the skin which is infected looks red and scaly it is possible that it could be another condition commonly known as baby eczema.

Root Causes

Studies have shown that Baby acne can possibly be attributed to hormones just like teenagers and young adults, however the hormone is passed from the mother whilst the child is in the womb. There are also tests being carried out to determine whether or not the medications which are administered to the baby could cause acne, however despite the ongoing studies it is still not fully understood.

Acne Baby Treatment

Baby acne is usually short lived and invariably lasts less than a month, however if you feel that it is not clearing up or if it is lasted more than twelve weeks it is advisable to speak with your doctor or clinic. It is also recommended that you don’t try to apply medication yourself as the cream and medicines which are primarily aimed at older sufferers could actually make the condition worse. The baby’s skin is extremely sensitive and will almost certainly react badly to the creams and oils and could cause the baby acute discomfort.

It is recommended that the acne baby rash isn’t overly washed as it can easily make the condition worse. The best way is to try and wash the baby’s face once a day with a very mild baby soap and warm water. Try to stop yourself fro scrubbing the effected area and pat it dry with a soft cotton towel. Baby acne is not caused by grease or dirt as in teenagers so you need to be patient with baby acne and the problem will gradually disappear. The fact is that babies don’t have the same hang ups as adults and if it is cared for it will go away as quickly as it appeared.
