For a great deal of time now acne has been the terror of both sexes during their teenage years, and, a topic not readily discussed. People who are plagued with acne have been visciously ridiculed and tormented, and distgustingly labeled with a name such as zit face. Only those who have really suffered from acne can truly understand how heartlessly cruel such name calling can really be. Over the years interesting advances have been made in the causes and symptoms of acne which have also resulted in more effective treatments.

What Actually Is Acne?

Acne is the name of an inflammatory disease of the skin often found in teenagers. Acne displays itself in the excess production of oil from sebaceous glands in the hair follicles which eventually become blocked. it can cause a malfunction in the follicles and pores in the skin on the face, arms and back but also including that of the chest. The blocked pores and follicles are medically labeled as comedo.

The comedone are those blockages in the pores which is a mixture of keratin and sebum. A comedo is referred to as being open or closed. An open comedo is what we commonly refer to as a ‘blackhead’, whereas the closed comedo is what most people call a ‘whitehead’.

Once a comedone has formed it is usually followed by the most unpleasant and highly visible symptom of acne – spots. First the comedone becomes infected and with this comes redness and inflammation of the skin, which then leads to an outbreak of pimples. The spots commonly become filled with pus and the skin surrounding the zit looks incredibly red and is sore to the touch.

There are two types of bacteria responsible for the infectiona and inflammation in acne, these are called Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. As well as being responsible for the formation of pus filled pimples, acne abcesses and cysts can occur.

The Causes of Acne

Our Scientists have made incredible strides forward in the understanding of the processes involved in the development of, and the treatment of, acne. Shockingly there has been few advances in the comprehension of why acne occurs. However, it is widely accepted thata selection of factors, for example stress, diet and hormone levels can all act as acne triggers.

The are a huge number of scientist researching genetic aspects of acne. Even if they do not manage to find the exact causes we can be certain that the increased understanding of the disease will help in the creation of new treatments.
